Diligence

Written by on May 8, 2023

We have all been told about being diligent in what we do, whether in the workplace, school, or even while doing household chores. We can define diligence as careful and persistent work or effort, careful attention, and unremitting application. We can describe a diligent person as assiduous industrious, conscientious, and thorough: not idle, negligent, and not lazy. The meaning of diligence in the Bible is the same and brings a spiritual aspect to it. The Bible speaks a lot about diligence from Proverbs 12:27 “Diligence is a man’s precious possession.” Proverbs 21:5, “the plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty.” and so many others. God asks us to be diligent in all we do.

“But without faith, it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6

One of my favorite verses about diligence is Hebrews 11:6, which ends with God being a rewarder of those who diligently seek him, meaning if we are careful and persistent in searching for God, he will reward us. God rewards us for our diligence and should not surprise us because diligence is required or every aspect of our life. It is a fact that a lazy, neglectful attitude will never get us where we need to go. If we take life assignments lightly, approaching them with a casual, easy-going, take-it-easy, relaxed attitude, we never go far to fulfill our call or dream.

If we are serious about succeeding in life, we adjust our level of commitment and give full attention to what God has called us to do. Diligence cannot be a sideline issue. Our assigned task must have our full consideration, undivided attention, and mental and spiritual attention. We must immerse ourselves in faith, prayer, and meditation regarding gods call in our lives.

It takes hard work to achieve any goal, and complaining about hard work won’t make it easier. So let us be constant in what we commit to. Therefore let us pray that God will continually equip us with discipline and the ability to be diligent in all we do.
