Written by on January 31, 2023

All roads will be leading this Saturday to St. Andrews PCEA Church in the capital city of Nairobi in an event to honor and celebrate the legendary Kenyan musician, Mary Atieno, on Saturday 4th February 2023. Mary Atieno is a household name in Kenya and the world who has uplifted many hearts through music from 1980s in a career that spans over 40 years with over 40 songs. She is famous for her songs Adamu na Eva, Sodoma na Gomorrah, Sauli Mbona Wanitesa, among others. She has inspired families and generations, ministers and musicians, among others with her courage, insight, and perceptions. Her spiritual eyes see so much of our world inasmuch as she has not had the physical sight. She is now 62 years and currently a teacher at Buruburu Girls Secondary School in Nairobi.

Larry Liza, the convener of the event says he felt pressed upon my heart to put up this event to honour this legend. “You may agree that Mama Mary Atieno is a mother to gospel music in Kenya. However, she is yet to be better celebrated by this nation. I believe that we can join hands as a people of faith and celebrate her while in this land of the living. For this reason, I brought together a team of friends and musicians who share this belief.” said Larry

Artists invited to grace the event include legendary Tanzanian artist Faustin Munishi, Sarah K, Geraldine Oduor, Larry Liza, Grace Kavesu and Mary Atieno herself. Dj Soxxy will be on the decks while the Mc’s of the day are gospel musician and TV presenter Joyce Omondi Waihiga and, radio presenter Mercy Mmbone.

The event will take place in the 5,000-sitter hall at St. Andrews PCEA Church along Nyerere Road, in Nairobi, starting 1.30pm and ending 6pm and entry is free. While the focus will be on Mary, other legends have been invited to grace the event with their presence. These legends include Reuben Kigame, the Kassangas, Nancy Torome, Mary Wambui, Esther Wahome, Ruth Wamuyu, among others.
