Steph Curry to Produce his first movie ‘Breakthrough’

Three-time NBA Champion Steph Curry has set records for the Golden State Warriors but now he’s turning his attention to Unanimous Media, intent on making films. His first film, Breakthrough, will be with DeVon Franklin’s Fox 2000 under their faith-based initiative, even as his media company has an overall deal for TV and film with Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Set for an April 12, 2019 release, the film will star Chrissy Metz (This is Us) as Smith will Topher Grace as Pastor Jason Noble.
“John’s story is nothing short of incredible,” said Curry. “It’s a story about the power of prayer and perseverance and one I immediately connected to. After reading the script, I knew I wanted to be a part of bringing it to life onscreen.”
DeVon Franklin said that the film “checks all [Curry’s] boxes: faith, true story, family and sports.” When the two met about potential media projects, Franklin passed Curry the script for Breakthrough and Curry signed on less within twenty-four hours. Curry’s Unanimous co-founders, Jeron Smith and Erick Peyton, joined Curry in giving notes on the film’s themes and several key scenes, including some involving basketball that added license permissions.
Curry’s own interests in faith-based, family entertainment drew him to Breakthrough, based on Joyce Smith’s memoir The Impossible. The Impossible tells the story of John Smith, Joyce’s son who also loves basketball, who fell through the ice and drowned, died, and was revived through the power of prayer.
